An Emergency Humanitarian Support Scheme has opened for flood hit small businesses in Cork.

It will help repair damage to premises in places like Bantry, which were flooded last weekend.

Business-owners can benefit from up to 5 thousand euro to replace flooring, fixtures and fittings, and damaged stock.

Independent Ireland TD for Cork South West, Michael Collins says while the funding is welcome, flood prevention measures are more important.

"Any scheme that compenstates small businesses especially in Bantry, and other parts of west Cork that were badly hit last week, will always be welcome.

"The bottom line here, the problem we have, is that it's continually handing out compensation to businesses who have been hit by floods in Bantry year in and year out - and the main flood relief scheme has not been started.
