Six towns and villages across Cork are among the 34 around the country that are still releasing raw sewage into the environment every day because they don't have treatment plants.
That's according to a new report by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The Cork towns include Ballycotton, Whitegate/Aghada, Cobh, Inchigeelagh, Castletownbere and Castletownshend.
The EPA report also shows that 12 large towns and cities did not meet wastewater treatment standards that have been set to protect the environment.
These areas generate half of Ireland's wastewater.
Noel Byrne, from the EPA, says Irish Water needs to take more action to fix the problem:
"Cork have discharged two Olympic sized swimming pools of raw sewage today that has now been resolved, so we are moving in the right direction. Irish Water have still failed to provide solutions and plans to improve treatment at 1/3 of the remaining priority areas that are impacted on rivers."
