An exchange student who was one of the first responders to a sword attack in Cobh at the end of March sat his Leaving Certificate exams yesterday.

Arian Hanitzch from Germany trained in First Aid and as a volunteer firefighter before coming to Coláiste Éamann Rís as an exchange student.

The 18-year-old helped Ian Baitson when he was attacked in Cobh until paramedics got to the scene to treat Mr Baitson who later died in hospital.

Mr Hanitzch says he wanted to try the Irish Leaving Cert while he was on the programme.

Speaking to RedFM News, Arian says he's had a life changing year:

I don't see me, really, as a hero. It's more than that you know, I want to show the people how easily you can help other people and how important first aid is my opinion, it should be a law for the country so everyone knows how to do it."
