The families of residents at the Owenacurra Mental Health Centre have cautiously welcomed the latest update from the HSE.
Cork Kerry Community Healthcare revealed it plans to set up a number of units in Midleton yesterday evening amid an ongoing campaign for the centre with 11 residents to stay open.
The current site of the Owenacurra centre- which is across the road from Midleton Community Hospital- is one location being considered for a new 10-bed rehab residential unit in the town, which the HSE says will support people to return to their homes.
At least one community unit for up to 4 residents will also be set up in the town.
The units will be staffed around the clock and the team will be led by a consultant.
Families of residents have campaigned for Owenacurra to remain open for the past year and have voiced concerns about residents being moved to units outside Midelton, which they say has become their home.
Speaking to RedFM News, family member Mary Hurley says they are keen to see the details of the plan.
"The devil is in the detail, and we really want to see what the HSE has in mind for this 10 bed residential service.
"What we do welcome is the 24 hour care aspect, because that is certainly what is required, both for rehab service but also residential service because you're dealign with people with a very high level of need, you really do need a 24 hour service so we certainly welcome that."
