MacSwiney died while on hunger strike in Brixton Prison 101 years ago this week after being arrested for sedition in August 1920.
Minister for Defence Simon Coveney presented MacSwiney's grandson Professor Cathal MacSuibhne Brugha with the medal at Collins Barracks in the City this morning.
The medal was presented to people with a military service certificate for the period 1916 to 1921.
