The father of 12 year old Callum Geary says his family are absolutely burnt out from fighting for his basic right to education.

The Ballyhooly boy is deaf but he has been unable to get a Irish Sign Language translator to assist him in school.

His father, Andrew, told RedFM News that despite Callum's obvious intelligence, and the best efforts of his teachers, Callum has been unable to progress to secondary school because of the lack of this essential support.

The family are now considering the prospect of an expensive High Court battle to force the state to provide Callum with an Irish Sign Language translator.

Speaking to RedFM News, Andrew Geary said that in the evenings Callum's mother Helen has to go through all his lessons again to ensure that he understands what what was taught in school that day:

"We as a family, we're absolutely burnt out from this journey, and we've given it 110% for a long, long time. And we're hoping that our democracy answers our call, and gives my son access to his full citizenship. The poor child can't even access an education in a fully recognised language. my wife is the hero of this piece. Helen has given this absolutely every part of her heart and soul and every evening she makes sure that Callum understands everything that happened in school that day."
