The Finance Minister says the people who rioted in Dublin last night have caused enormous psychical and reputational damage to the country.

Michael McGrath has hit out at “thugs who took the law into their own hands” and says the Gardaí will get whatever resources they need to deal with such criminality.

The Minister says his thoughts are with the children and adults injured in yesterday’s stabbing incident, paid tribute to the ‘extraordinary courage’ of the people who responded to the it, and thanked the emergency services who responded to last night’s violence.

Speaking to RedFM News Minister McGrath says last night’s action has nothing to do with concern over what happened earlier in the day:

"This was an opportunistic response by a group of thugs who took the law in to their own hands. They brought shame on themselves, their families and their country. The full force of the law needs to be applied in relation to these individuals and I know that the Gardai will go through all of the CCTV footage over the period ahead and I expect many, many more will be brought before the courts"
