Firefighters at Cork City who have been demonstrating since April in a row over staffing at Ballincollig Fire Station have ended their action

It follows the acceptance by the full time firefighters of proposals hammered out at the Workplace Relations Commission

The long running dispute was sparked after crew from the city centre were tasked to respond to emergency calls in the Ballincollig area after efforts to recruit retained firefighters for the station were unsuccessful

Firefighters expressed their concern about the arrangement as they said their resources were being spread too thinly.

Speaking to RedFM News SIPTU rep and Cork City Firefighter Billy Crowley says while it was long process they are happy with the WRC proposal:

"After the closure of Ballincollig fire station, we were reduced from four fire pumps down to three four pumps and this deal that we've done with with Cork City Council. It means that that fourth pump is going to go back on the run. I think we're we're generally happy enough with the proposal that came out of the WRC, it was a long process. But I think at the end of it, I think ourselves and management kind of put our heads together and we came up with a plan that that looks like it would work."
