The price of fish will rise and jobs will be lost in the fishing industry unless steps are taken to tackle the crisis in Irish fishing
The number of fish being processed in Ireland is at its lowest level ever with the stringent enforcement of regulations on the landing and processing of fish being blamed for the decline
The Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation says reduced fishing quotas are squeezing fishermen out of the industry and will lead to job cuts in the processing industry
Speaking to RedFM News Patrick Murphy of the organisation says for the consumer this means a shortage of supply which will drive up prices
"It's like supply and demand if you don't have supply then the demand goes up and the prices get more expensive. Plus, if other people are catching the fish you will be amazed that it goes around the world so it goes out first to Spain or somewhere else, it gets processed and then exported back into our country or imported back into our country, so of course there's a cost involved in this and that drives up the price"
