Heavy rain and a storm surge overnight are combining with this morning's high tide to bring Cork City to a standstill this morning.

A status yellow warning for rain remains in place nationwide until three o'clock this afternoon.

Cork City Council officials say flooding in the riverside area this morning is likely to be worse than last night.

The quays, Morrisons Island and low lying areas of the city centre have been closed while motorists are being asked to avoid the South Mall due to flooding.

Sharman Crawford Street is also closed.

Head of Services David Joyce says several cars on Union Quay narrowly avoided being destroyed last night:

In the county, the Pier Road and Lower Road in Kinsale are impassable and there are reports of spot flooding in nearby Belgooly.

The Bailick Road in Midleton is impassable, there's flooding in Rostellan, Lower Aghada, in Whitegate Village and on the Back Street in Youghal.

The bridge from Bandon to Timoleague Village is impassable and motorists are asked to use caution at the Causeway on the Clonakilty side of Rosscarbery.

Gardaí say the Ring Road in Clonakilty is impassable, care is needed on the Inchydoney Road and a tree is blocking the road into Glenville.
