The former Lord Mayor of the city is calling for more Garda visibility on the streets of Cork.

Councillor Deirdre Forde says she doesn't feel safe walking around the streets at night.

Recent reports show an increase in anti-social behaviour and assaults in the city with drinking in the streets, drug taking and selling and theft in shops being the major issues that people have highlighted.

There have been calls for an increase in Garda presence in cities across the country after an American tourist was attacked in Dublin last week.

Speaking to RedFM News, Former Lord Mayor of the city and councillor Deirdre Forde says more Gardaí are needed in Cork City so that people feel safe.

"We must remember that people pay taxes to keep the city centre looking well, and they have every right to expect that they can come in with their families, and the businesses have every right to expect that they can conduct their hard worked businesses in our city centre and be protected from that sort of behaviour. Zero tolerance is what I say."
