Fresh calls are being made for the introduction of a supervised injection centre in the city to tackle the city's rising heroin problem..
That call has come from the City's Lord Mayor Cllr Colm Kelleher who says the "out of sight, out of mind" approach to addiction is not working in Cork
He has lodged a request for funding with the Health Minister.
Speaking to RedFM News, Lord Mayor Cllr Kelleher says it's time for an adult conversation around the issue of addiction:
"I was asked the question, "Would I like it in my own backyard?" A lot of people would say, "You know, yes, we are in favour of it, but I don't want it on my doorstep". You know, but you have to look at the city as a whole and find out where it's concentrated in the city and offer the positioning of that centre relevant to where it's most prevalent. But if there was a centralised centre. One to start with; possibly in a medical campus, in an existing facility around the city. I think that would be a massive step in the right direction".
