Fresh calls for mobile supervised injection facility for Cork city

It comes as the Cork minister with responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy says no decision on a fixed injection facility for Cork will be made until a pilot scheme in Dublin could be fully assessed.

It's expected that it could take up to 18 months before that review is completed.

Former Lord Mayor of the city Fianna Fail Cllr Colm Kelleher says the longer we wait, the more people who are needlessly dying in Cork from overdoses:

"I personally don’t think that Cork should wait to see what happens in Dublin. There is the option of a mobile facility which is effectively a minibus type of van kitted with medical equipment on board and acts as a needle exchange, but it would also have Naloxone on board and the beauty of these is you can have them adjacent to a medical campus so if something does go awry, professionals are on hand."
