The Minister of State at the Department of Transport announced a major capital funding grant for Cork Airport this morning.

Cork Airport will receive almost €5.5m under the Regional Airports Programme 2021-2025.

Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton announced this morning that Cork airport will be among five airports which are to receive the funding.

Capital grants totalling nearly €16.4m have been awarded to Cork, Kerry, Shannon, Knock (Ireland West) and Donegal airports.

Cork will receive the most money of the five, at €5.46m.

The funding has been made available under the under the Regional Airports Programme 2021-2025.

Cork and Shannon have never been eligible for funding under this Programme before now.

However, Covid suppressed passenger numbers in 2020 and 2021 at the airports, meaning they both became eligible in 2022.

Among other projects, Cork Airport will use the money to complete a significant electrical substation, to reduce the airport's environmental impact.

This project will complete the revamp of the runway, which began last September and closed Cork Airport for 10 weeks.
