The Gardaí and Interpol are warning online shoppers in Cork to be extra aware of fraud at this time of the year.
Detective Superintendent Michael Cryan at the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau says Online Shopping Fraud, also known as Purchase Fraud is an increasing trend this year.
Garda figures show 2 million euro was stolen from customers and businesses through the scams in the first ten months of this year.
He says as people rush to buy last minute presents, they may let their guard down and become less cautious.
Speaking to RedFM News, Detective Superintendent Michael Cryan gave these tips to online shoppers:
"The first one is always just to be careful, don't take risks, it's your money. If you're buying online, make sure it's a real website, not a cloned or fake website. Know your consumer rights. Only pay with a credit card and don't transfer money direct. Don't enter into any off-site communication for a lower price. You have consumer rights where you use your credit card".
