Concern has been raised that the riots in Dublin at the end of last year may lead to a disproportionate number of gardai being allocated to the capital
Garda numbers in Cork have been dropping over the past decade despite the fact that the population is on the rise
Concerns have been expressed about large commuter towns such as Carrigaline in particular which has seen no increase in garda personnel despite a huge population growth
The head of the Cork City Joint Policing Committee says infrastructure and services have not grown to meet the population rise and Cork needs a greater allocation of gardai
Speaking to RedFM News Local Fianna Fail Councillor Seamus McGrath says there is a strong policing need in Cork
"When you look at the likes of Dublin, and you see the riots that took place there recently, you see the pressure for extra gardai in Dublin it's going to be a major challenge for us in Cork to make the case that we also need gardai here. We also represent large urban areas where there is a strong policing need. And it's important that we're not forgotten when gardai are graduating from Templemore and being allocated garda management"
