The incident happened on Railway Street close to Kent Station at 10:20pm last night when the man was beaten with a crutch.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after he was discovered by a passerby.
He was taken to Cork University Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Gardaí arrested a man in his 20s in relation to the incident and investigations are ongoing.
