Gardaí are working with Interpol to determine the identity of a 70-year-old man who was arrested after he allegedly used the name of a baby who died in 1953 to apply for a passport.
The man who was charged in the name of Philip Frank Morris, of no fixed address, appeared at Cork District Court via video link today.
Philip Morris appeared before the court last Friday after being arrested at the passport office in Cork.
He was charged with two offences relating to allegedly providing false or misleading information to obtain a passport.
Detective Garda Padraic Hanley of the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation told the court that Gardaí do not know who the man is but said he is not Philip Frank Morris because Philip Morris died 70 years ago when he was four months old.
The court heard that Gardaí had confirmed the death of the four-month-old and had interviewed the child’s brother.
Det Garda Hanley said it was not possible to say when the identity of the person in custody would become known and said further charges could be brought in the case.
Judge Olann Kelleher remanded the man in custody to appear before the court again on the 3rd of October.
