The general election will officially get underway later.

Simon Harris will request the dissolution of the Dáil around lunchtime.

1,735 days after Ireland voted in the last general election Simon Harris will bring down the curtain on the 33rd Dáil.

He flies back from Budapest this morning and after a short stop at Government Buildings he'll head to Aras an Uachtarain where President Michael D Higgins will dissolve the Dáil.

The launches start before that with Labour revealing the detail of its housing policy as a short, sharp three week campaign gets underway.

Those entitled to a postal vote need to get their application in TODAY - with people registering for the first time having until just Tuesday to do so on check the register dot ie.
