22 year old Garreth Blount from Mayfield was first diagnosed with advanced oesophageal cancer earlier this year while working as a teacher and basketball coach in Spain.
Garreth underwent surgery and treatment, however the latest scans have revealed that the cancer has reappeared, meaning surgery is no longer an option.
Garreth's brother Jordan- Neptune Basketball Club player- launched a GoFundMe campaign yesterday to help to pay for immunotherapy treatment to prolong Garreth's life.
The treatment could give the young man another year of life but costs €7,000 per dose and is not currently funded by the government.
Speaking to RedFM News, Garreth's brother Jordan says they are overwhelmed by the support of people in Cork and across the country:
"We knew of the treatment a while back, we knew it cost a lot of money but we didn't know that he needed it that bad just yet. So it's been absolutely breath-taking and a breath of fresh air because, I've been a part of so many communities over the years, and so has he, and then just to see them all come together in different ways from different parts of the world: it's been shocking really in the best way and it's been a huge uplift to Garrett's spirits and his want to fight and everything like that, so it's unbelievable."
