The Taoiseach says the construction of the M20 Cork to Limerick Motorway could start before 2025.

Leo Varadkar was speaking after Green Party TD Ossian Smyth said the €900 million project would not happen in the lifetime of the next government, leading to calls for clarity on the development.

Plans for the 90 kilometre road have been thrown into doubt a number of times due to the impact of the last recession, disagreements over the proposed route and questions about whether the road was actually needed in the first place.

Leo Vardakar says the government is committed to the project.

"The M20 is much further back in the planning process.

"It wouldn't be fair to say that it's going to be built by 2025, but it can certainly start construction before 2025 under this new government."
