The Government is refusing to remove the higher charges for those who choose to renew their motor tax on a quarterly or half-yearly basis rather than annually.
The Irish Examiner is reporting this morning that Cork County Council wrote to the Government asking it to introduce the same system as the local property tax where homeowners have the option of monthly payments at no extra cost.
Paying for motor tax every six months costs the motorist 11% more than the annual rate, while those who pay quarterly are charged 14% more.
The paper says there was unanimous cross-party support at a recent County Council meeting for the system to be changed.
Junior minister, Hildegarde Naughton’s office replied to the council, saying the Government won’t chance the extra percentage charges because they say they are needed to meet administrative costs.
