The Government is under fire for failing to tackle vacancy rates in Cork.

Preliminary census figures show there's been a 1.5% drop in vacancy levels in Cork since 2016 when levels were at 8.6%.

The slight drop comes despite two Government policies aimed at tackling vacancy and the establishment of a Vacant Homes Unit in the Department of Housing.

Vacancy levels in some parts of the city are standing around 12% with more than 30% of the vacant homes under Census 22 also vacant at the previous census 6 years ago.

The census shows that in the city Montenotte, Tivoli and parts of the St Luke's area still have the highest rates of vacant properties.

In total, 4,994 houses were recorded as vacant in Cork city during this Census.
