The Green Party leader says plans to potentially house refugees in floating accommodation in the city are at a very early stage and have not yet been confirmed.

Minister Eamon Ryan was speaking in Ringaskiddy today at the launch of The Port of Cork's masterplan for the next 30 years.

The Port of Cork have identified two sites at Penrose Quay and Horgan's Quay where floating accommodation for refugees could be moored, however it’s not yet known how many people could be accommodated

The shortage of places for refugees including those fleeing the war in Ukraine has become severe, with the Department of Integration confirming this week that they are now considering floating accommodation.

Speaking to RedFM News, Minister Eamon Ryan says the plan has not yet been confirmed:

"I don't think anyone is in a position to talk about timelines or locations at the moment. It's only as an early stage of consideration, so I don't think it's anywhere near that sort of level of preparation or advanced planning. I wouldn't want to second guess people looking at the various different options. So I think, I'll wait and see what the outcome is of those people looking at it, but it's at very, very early stages. I don't think anything's decided".
