The group are calling for speed ramps to be installed on the road and say that €25,000 in funding that was ring-fenced for the measures last year should be used immediately.
Earlier this year the city council said an engineer’s report would be needed before works could be undertaken, however residents say the cost of conducting the report could wipe out the funding already in place and have called for the council’s own engineers to examine how traffic could be managed along the road.
The road was the scene of two serious crashes in 2020 and 2021, the first of which led to the death of 16-year-old student Kimberly O’Connor.
Speaking to RedFM News, local resident Don O’Sullivan outlines why residents want action taken:
"On a Friday afternoon, we counted care for 15 minutes and we had 285 cars in 15 minutes that came up Harbour View Road on a Friday. So if you go by the hour, that's over 1,100 cars an hour, so you're looking at eight hours, 10 hours where the volume of traffic is high. It's a very built up area and these roads were never supposed to take that amount of traffic."
