A High Court Judge has urged the city and county councils to embrace the 'We are Cork' spirit in relation to a Kildare Village style retail outlet for East Cork.
The comments by Ms Justice Niamh Hyland came after she granted an application to lift a stay on the County Council which had prevented it for changing the development plan to allow for a retail outlet in the east of the county.
The Judge said it is regrettable that litigation could not have been avoided to allow for a change in the development plan which would let the €100m retail outlet centre pending full proceedings later this month.
The Irish Examiner report the Judge said she was very struck by the tagline on the notepaper of both local authorities - 'We are Cork' - and that it is not in the interests of either local authority to take an isolationist approach to the development.
She acknowledged that the retail outlet raises difficulties because of it's impact on shopping in the city centre while on the other hand weighing these up with the benefits that it may bring to the county
As she handed down her ruling Ms Justice Niamh Hyland said it is now hoped that both local authorities will achieve a solution that will be in the overall interests of Cork
