Historic graves at a Cork graveyard have been uncovered by sheep.

The long-lost grave of a child who died in 1872 was discovered after the sheep were brought into Templebreedy graveyard in Crosshaven.

The great grand nephw of that child has been traced and he now plans to visit from the UK.

The oldest gravestone found at the one-hectare site dates back to 1711.

Last year Local Fianna Fail councillor Audrey Buckley came up with the idea of introducing goats to help with the overgrowth after coming across the practice on a trip to Wales.

She told RedFM news the sheep were introduced in March.

"We have the sheep in for the last three or four months, eating the grass around the old markers stones which have been lost for I'd say over 50 years.

"We have a core group of volunteers, and we go in behind the sheep and we gently remove the scrub, so we've actually uncovered a lot and that's how it came about."
