A Cork TD says there would be a public outcry if plans were submitted for the development of lands at a former mother and baby home in Tuam yet planning is being sought for a third time for housing at Bessborough.
Holly Cairns says she remains completely opposed to plans for any development on the grounds of the former Mother and baby home in Blackrock which she says is totally inappropriate as the remains of over 800 children are still unaccounted for .
Last year An Bord Pleanála rejected a Strategic Housing Development within the estate as they were not satisfied that the site had not previously been used as a children's burial ground.
Speaking to RedFM News Deputy Cairns says any attempt to develop a site within the grounds is insensitive until such a time that the remains of these 800 children who died at the institution are located.
"I think if you consider what happened in Tuam, Bessborough is very similar.
"There are over 800 unaccounted for child and infant remains. We know that they are potentially somewhere one the site.
"To even consider applying for planning permission in the area, until the truth is uncovered it's quite frankly inappropriate and inconsiderate, and really shouldn't even be considered at this stage."
