People are being advised to put away their garden furniture and outdoor Christmas decorations ahead of Storm Barra tomorrow.
A Status Orange Wind Warning comes into effect at 6am for 24 hours across Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Galway.
A yellow alert will be in place for the rest of the country over the same period.
Crisis management teams are finalising emergency plans today, with high winds, storm surges and power outages expected.
Head of forecasting at Met Eireann, Evelyn Cusack, says homeowners also need to prepare.
"The level of precautions I would say should be at a high level.
"At the very least bring in everything.
"Certainly with the way this is developing I would advise not cycling or anything like that tomorrow.
"As well as very strong winds, there will be driving rain, and showers and even some sleet and hail mixed in."
