Hundreds of people attended a silent vigil last night for Emili Roman who died while swimming in Fountainstown on Tuesday.
People gathered in Crosshaven Square on what would have been Emili and her twin brother Jeremy's 8th birthday.
Emili was in second class at Templebreedy National School in Crosshaven and her school described her as kind, with a bubbly personality and a beautiful smile.
Last night Emili's name was spelled out in candles and there was a round of applause for the emergency services who recovered her body from the water.
Speaking to RedFM News, Local Councillor Audrey Buckley says a GoFundMe page to help with funeral costs has now surpassed €40,000:
"It was a family friend, she did ask her permission to "go fund me" for the funeral costs and memorial cost for the child and it was up to I think €5000 they put a cap on it, but it's just gone way surpassed that. It's people from America, people from all over world you know, that are from this area because they're living abroad and are on social media that the outpouring supports. It's just been phenomenal."
