The number of serious assaults increased in Cork city last year.
The latest meeting of the Joint Policing Committee has heard there was 238 assaults causing harm in the city in 2021- an increase of 43 compared to 2020.
There was 94 incidents of arson, an increase of 8 compared to the year before, while there was a significant decrease in property crime with a reduction of 606 recorded incidents.
The meeting heard there was a significant increase of 130 public order offenses in the city Garda division last year, with 1,116 recorded incidents.
Members of the committee have called for tougher sentencing to crack down on sexual and physical assaults as well as drug crimes.
