There has been a slight increase in the number of people detected driving while intoxicated in Cork compared to last year.

The figures for the first eight months of the year were revealed at a Joint Policing Committee meeting at County Hall yesterday.

532 drivers were caught driving under the influence of drink or drugs between the start of the year and the end of August.

It’s an increase of 11 drivers compared to the same time last year.

Chief Superintendent Vincent O’Sullivan said new roadside drug testing swabs introduced at the end of last year were proving very effective in the fight against intoxicated driving.

The meeting also heard that ten people have died on the roads of the city and county this year, four of them were pedestrians while one was a cyclist.

The issue of drivers speeding, especially in built up areas, was raised by several councillors at the meeting.

Chief Superintendent O’Sullivan said Gardaí will continue to factor community reports into their approach to speeding.
