Inland Fisheries Ireland say there needs to be accountability over a major fish kill in North Cork.

Legal action is being considered after 5 thousand fish died when the River Allow near Kanturk was contaminated.

Its reported chemicals may have leaked into the river from a water treatment plant in Freemount.

Speaking to RedFM news, Sean Long from Inland Fisheries Ireland says a remediation need process needs to be put in place:

"Because you prosecute someone, if you're successful in the court, it doesn't necessarily mean that these issues don't arise again in the future. The key thing is to ensure that remediation is in place to identify how something like this happened. what measures are necessary to minimize the risk of it happening again. And to make sure that those measures are put in place."
