The Irish Penal Reform Trust have rasied their concerns and are calling for investment in community sanctions rather than the issuing of short custodial sentences
Saoirse Brady of the IPRT has described the conditions as "inhumane" and says she has repeatedly been raising the issue of overcrowding across the prison system
10 inmates at Cork Prison were sleeping on mattresses on the floor of the facility last Friday
Speaking to RedFM News Saoirse Brady of the Irish Penal Reform Trust outlined what that experience at Cork is like
"When we talk about overcrowding, we're talking about people sharing a cell maybe sleeping on a mattress, and that mattress being beside an unpartitioned toilet. People have to use that toilet in front of other people and that that's inhumane and degrading. We shouldn't be in a position where that still happening across the prisoner estate"
