HIQA carried out an unannounced inspection at the Emergency Department in June and found that demand for emergency care far outstripped the available resources.

The report also highlights the lack of surge capacity and effective patient flow, with admission times of between two hours and over 58 hours on the day of the inspection.

Speaking to RedFM News, Colm Porter from the INMO in Cork says he's not surprised by the reports findings:

"It's kind of in line with what the INMO was saying and what other groups have been saying about the situation in CUH at the minute. I think firstly, that the most important thing to note is that the HIQA report actually did recognise that staff working in the hospital's emergency department are committed and dedicated to promoting a person centred approach to care. Also the inspectors; they did observe that staff had a kind and caring approach to patients in the department and that they're doing their very best to respond to their individual needs."
