An inquest into the death of a 34-year-old man who died from a ruptured aorta has heard there was a delay in diagnosing the issue that caused his death.

Pat Murphy from Glanmire in Cork died at Cork University Hospital on the 3rd of September 2021.

Pat Murphy’s widow, Keerti Krishnan Murphy, said he started to feel unwell while watching a soccer game on television and eventually took a taxi to CUH due to a delay in being collected by an ambulance.

She said he was sitting in a chair in the ED for nine hours until he was given a bed, while a CT scan was carried out the next day as the scanner in the ED was broken.

Emergency surgery was carried out to repair a ruptured aortic aneurysm, however the operation was not successful and the father of one died the next day.

CUH say they apologised unreservedly for the failings in Patrick Murphy’s care and for the failure to diagnose the aortic dissection.

The inquest continues this morning.
