Jack Downey died at Cork University Hospital on the 5th of August 2019 after he took MDMA, otherwise known as ecstasy, at Indiependence in Mitchelstown three days earlier.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster said Jack died from total organ failure and said the drug was the main cause of his death.

Dr Bolster also said Jack would not have suffered once he fell into a coma. She said there is a huge risk associated with taking drugs such as MDMA because people have no idea what is in the drug.

The inquest heard that Jack had been keen to get the drugs to take at the festival and had started taking it at around 2:30pm on the first day of the festival.

Coroner Philip Comyn was told that Jack began shaking uncontrollably after consuming the drugs and that his friends begged him not to take anymore.

Jack told his friends that he was fine and took more of the drug.

He was taken to the medical tent around two hours later when friends noticed that Jack didn't 'look right' and was on the way to Cork University Hospital by 5pm.

The coroner said it was unfortunate that Jack had decided to take the drugs and recorded a verdict of death by misadventure.
