Kieran Downey was speaking on the first day of an inquest into the death of his 36 year old wife and four day old son Darragh at Cork University Maternity Hospital in March 2019.
In emotional testimony, Kieran Downey said he had first met his wife in 2005 and they were married in 2012.
He said a lack of sleep and exhaustion was one of the causes for Marie having seizures.
The court heard a seizure would typically last around 2 to 3 minutes and that it would take around 30 minutes for Marie to recover.
He also hit out at the HSE for not including the deaths of Marie and Darragh on CUMH's safety statement which he said was signed off on 6 weeks after their deaths. He said they were not given the respect of having their deaths recorded on the statement and said he had no confidence in the HSE systems.
Kieran Downey broke down several times while recounting the day he was told his wife had died.
He told the Court that everyone was looking forward to welcoming Marie and Darragh back home on the 25th of March when he received a missed call from an 021 number. When his phone rang again, he answered it and was asked to come to the hospital and to bring someone with him.
He said he questioned why he needed to bring someone with him and became panicked after he tried to call Marie on her phone.
When he arrived at the hospital with his father he was told that Marie had died and that four day old Darragh had also suffered injuries when his mother fell on top of him.
The inquest continues.
