An inquest is due to open today into the death of a mother of three and her new born son who both died at Cork University Maternity Hospital.

Marie Downey from Kildorrery was found dead on the floor of her single room on the 25th of March 2019 while her 4 day old son Darragh, who was found trapped underneath her, died the following day.

It's thought Ms Downey who had epilepsy got out of bed and then suffered a medical episode, which caused her to fall and suffer fatal injuries.

An external review into the deaths has recommended the appointment of an epilepsy clinical nurse specialist or advanced nurse practitioner to the hub maternity hospital in each of the country's seven hospital groups.

An inquest into the death of the 36 year old and her baby is due to open later today before Cork City Coroner Philip Comyn.

It is scheduled to last two days and will establish the cause of death in both cases.
