Investigations into an attack on a family home which resulted in a 12-year-old girl needing surgery on a fractured skull are continuing in North Cork.

Five men in balaclavas attacked the house on the New Line close to the centre of Charleville town after 11pm on Monday night.

The girl was seriously injured when the gang broke a window at the house before fleeing the scene in a black car.

Superintendent Gary McPolin is leading the investigation and he told RedFM News a technical examination has taken place:

"We are conducting house to house enquiries in the Charleville area. The interview room has been set up in Mallow Garda Station and we are appealing to any independent witnesses who may have observed the five males in the black vehicle heading in the direction of Charleville, anyone with dashcams or observed anything out of the ordinary on Monday night or might have heard anything or has any information."
