The Irish Blood Transfusion Service is urging people to support their life saving work by becoming a blood donor.

There is currently between 5 and 12 days’ supply of most blood types as the Bank Holiday Weekend approaches, however there is just two days supply of the AB-negative blood type.

The service is also asking companies and community groups to consider hosting a one-day clinic for their employees to donate.

Speaking to RedFM news, Julianne Kelly from the IBTS is asking anyone who has considered becoming a donor to contact them:

Quite  smooth process. I think there's a level of fear when it comes to just even needles themselves. But we have amazing staff who are so well trained and so gentle and that process is so straightforward. So we do encourage anybody that might have that little bit of fear to come forward and they won't regret it. Once you do at once, you definitely will continue to do it, given that it saves lives"
