The Irish Heart Foundation is urging Cork people to familiarise themselves with the signs of stroke and what to do in the event of witnessing one.

Research conducted nationally has found that only one in five people know the most important steps to take in the event of a stroke.

There were 210 stroke or stroke-related deaths in Cork in 2020 - 90 men and 120 women - according to Central Statistics Office data.

The Irish Heart Foundation has launched a new Act F.A.S.T. campaign nationwide.

Every letter in the word FAST stands for one of the signs of a stroke.

F for "Facial Weakness"
A for "Arm Weakness"
S for "Speech Problems"
And T for "Time", because the sooner emergency services are called, the higher the patient's chance of survival.
