Iarnród Éireann says a Luas style transport system would completely transform public transport in Cork

It comes as the Minister for Transport says a light rail system is badly needed in the city and hopes to get the project to the planning stages by the end of the year.

The Cork Luas would run from Ballincollig to Mahon and is expected to cost between 2 and 3 billion euro.

Speaking to RedFM News, CEO of Iarnród Éireann Jim Meade says Kent Station would be the key interchange station for the Cork Luas:

"The long term plan from the Dept. of Transport and the NTA is for a metro system for Cork that will interchange at Kent Station. We will have buses, walking, active travel. So it's about creating that environment where people will migrate to public transport and the first choice of transport for people around the city will be public transport."

Meanwhile, Iarnrod Eireann plans to bring thousands more across Cork within 5 kilometres of a train station.

Irish Rail has committed to improving its network for commuters as well as delivering faster intercity services.

8 new stations are being planned across the county to include Blackpool, Blarney and Carrigtwohill.
