Discoloured drinking water in Cork city recently was caused by sediment becoming dislodged in the water mains due to the chemicals used in the preparation of drinking water.
The Echo report that residents in the city had been complaining of water discolouration in the past several months, and at multiple locations.
Irish Water say investigations were carried out and it was discovered that the chemistry used to prepare drinking water was altered when new infrastructure came online, causing sediment to come loose and as a result discolouration occured.
Irish Water say they are monitoring the situation closely, and say that water is not contaminated, and that the results in this case did not warrant a boil water notice.
