Ironman has threatened legal action against Triathlon Ireland as the row over when Ironman was told the race would not be sanctioned rumbles on.
The Irish Times reports that Ironman International has told Triathlon Ireland to withdraw the statement it issued the day after the race.
Triathlon Ireland released a statement eight days ago which said its Technical Officials attended before the start of the race to review conditions and carry out a water safety assessment.
The statement goes on to say that the officials confirmed to the race organisers that it was not possible to sanction the race.
One day later Ironman hit back with a statement that did not name Triathlon Ireland but said “federation representatives” were present during the event and only told Ironman Ireland officials that the race wouldn’t be sanctioned when the swim had already been completed.
Triathlon Ireland said they had nothing further to say on the matter but stressed that their officials told Ironman officials that the race would not be sanctioned before the start of the swim.
The Irish Times reports that Ironman solicitors have informed Triathlon Ireland solicitors that they will launch a defamation action in the coming days if Triathlon Ireland does not publicly withdraw its statement.
RedFM News has contacted Ironman and Triathlon Ireland for a comment.
