Cork County Council says Ironman has the sole responsibility for the management and coordination of the event following the deaths of two men during Sunday’s race in Youghal.
The local authority says Ironman has the sole responsibility to run the event with due care, skill and attention.
In a statement this evening, Cork County Council says its responsibilities are limited to the organisation of road closure permits, the use by Ironman of certain Council facilities such as buildings, car parks and public areas and the provisions of services such as waste collection.
The local authority says it does not have any responsibility for the management and operation of the event or any decisions related to the races proceeding.
The Council say the deaths of Brendan Wall and Ivan Chittenden may be the subject of a Coroner’s Inquest and is seeking a full account of the event from Ironman.
They have also said that the Council will determine its future position as host sponsor once it has received and considered the report.
The Council says it will not be making further comment and have offered their condolences to the families and friends of the two men.
