A jury at Cork City Coroner’s Court has returned a narrative verdict following a two-day inquest into the death of a 34-year-old father of one at Cork University Hospital in September 2021.
The verdict, which means the story of what happened to Pat Murphy from Glanmire in Cork was recorded, was one of four verdicts open to the jury.
Pat Murphy died from a tear to the aorta in his heart after initially being misdiagnosed as having kidney stones.
Speaking after the verdict solicitor Roger Murray says the Murphy family have taken comfort that Cork University Hospital have made changes following Pat’s death:
"They now have a policy in relation to disseminating information in relation to the tragic outcome here. They have spoken about him at meetings, and the evidence that was heard over two days: narrowing, difficult evidence hopefully will establish that this is something that will create awareness, will raise awareness and that’s the one legacy they hope can be achieved for Patrick from these events."
