A jury Cork City Coroner’s court has recommended greater supervision of special-licence medications be carried out and named after 13-year-old Cork girl Ava Barry.
It follows an inquest into the death of Ava, who was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called Dravet Syndrome when she was four months old and died from pneumonia in May last year after becoming severely unwell.
The jury recorded a verdict of death by natural causes and made the recommendation after Ava’s family requested a policy be drawn up for inpatients who are prescribed medicinal cannabis.
Ava’s mother Vera Twomey spoke about Ava outside the court:
"Ava was funny, she was kind, she ruled the house. She lit up the room- I'm totally biased, I suppose- but everybody who met Ava... Ava had an impact on people."
