The lack of a South Doc service in Castletownbere could lead to a loss of life on the Beara Peninsula.

That's according to local Independent TD Michael Collins who is to raise the matter in the Dáil in this morning.

There has been no out of hours service in the area for the past fortnight due to the retirement of a local locum which locals say was well flagged with the HSE.

Local GPs have stepped in and are covering some nights however the area has been left without a proper GP service overnight leaving locals with no option but to contact.

Bantry South Doc which is over an hour and a half journey in some cases.

Speaking to RedFM News Deputy Michael Collins says it's time the Health Minister stepped in and resolved the issue before a life is lost.

"I have no doubt in my mind that if there's a serious urgency of a need for a medical professional it's going to lead to a loss of life in Castletownbere and its surrounds.

"It's something that needs to be dealt with urgently, and it needs a resolution urgently.

"It will lead to a loss of life, and it needs to be addressed immediately by the Minister and the Department of Health."
