Bishop David O'Connell, who is originally from Glanmire, was found shot dead at his Hacienda Heights home on the 18th of February 2023.

63-year-old Carlos Medina of Torrance in LA County is due to appear before Hollywood Superior Court on the 31st of this month after his legal team raised concerns about his mental competence.

His lawyers did not suggest he was mentally incompetent when the alleged offence happened, and if he is found to be mentally incompetent, he will be treated until he is deemed fit.

The 69-year-old Bishop of Los Angeles, known as 'Bishop Dave', was well known for his peacemaking efforts during the LA Riots in 1992, which followed the trial of four police officers accused of beating Rodney King.

Carlos Medina - whose wife was the bishop's housekeeper - previously pleaded not guilty to murder and faces 35 years to life if convicted.
